Why Did You Choose Nursing?

For Myself, a career in Nursing was the only choice as I was able to assist individuals to regain or maintain their health and quality of life. It was also a way I could financially create a life for my family and it was something I liked to do. That was 15 years ago. Since then, things have changed! I found myself working longer, harder hours to realize the same income. I was forced to spend less time with my patients and more time with the red tape aspects of the Profession. Working with others who appeared not to be dedicated to the profession, rather more interested in talking about their favorite TV shows or why they were breaking up with their boyfriend this time. I found myself in that movie, you know “Groundhog Day” where Bill Murray was living the same day over and over.  I was living paycheck to paycheck, putting birthdays and holidays on the credit card, slowly going deeper and deeper into debt. My Career had turned into an assembly line job so the Doctors could make more and more money. Something had to give! I did this for the last 5 years of my career as a Nurse!

Like Crabs In A Bucket?

As a Registered Nurse,

I was always looking at the news. Watching for problems with the economy, being anxious about the price of gas and utilities and wondering if I was going to have a job when the “In-Season” visitors left. I felt like I had to continually keep my eyes open for another Job in case the one I had failed. Not knowing if your job is secure can drive a guy to drink! Without financial security, it is difficult to look at a prosperous future. I found that I was not dreaming about what I could do or where I could go because I was stuck in the mundane world of keeping my ‘shoulder to the grind stone’.

Nurses, Get Back Control Of Your Lives!

When was it that we lost control of our own lives and became a slave to the chaotic and stressful life of the 9 to 5? At what point were faced with the reality that we had to choose our jobs over our families out of necessity in order to be able to afford even the most basic of things like food, shelter, even water in some cases? How in the world did it come down to us having to fork over cash every week just to have someone else watch our children because we can’t be there due to work? Can you believe that we have actually been reduced to working for a paycheck in order to have the money to pay for someone to watch our kids WHILE we work? Sounds ridiculous, I know. And that’s only if you are fortunate to make enough money to have someone else watch your kids, I know a lot of parents who struggle just to feed their kids, getting a baby sitter is a luxury. Then they worry all day about what their children are doing when they are home by themselves while they are at work…

Alternative For Nurse Burnout…From A Nurse!

Isn’t it depressing to know that so many people are stuck spinning their wheels living a life they swear was never meant for them in the first place? When we were younger we had such big aspirations for ourselves and somewhere along the way, life took over and the dream seemed to disappear. You may catch a glimpse of it every now and again and I’m sure it makes you smile, but then you’re snapped back to reality when the baby gets sick yet you don’t know how you are going to pay your bills for the week since you have to take a day off from work. Even if you do take that day off you know you’re not going to get anything but flack from the boss and you’ll be paranoid for a while after that your job is in jeopardy. Isn’t it pathetic that we have to worry about taking a day off from work to care for a child we we brought into this world to love and protect? Can you believe that we’ve been reduced to actually feeling guilty for that?
