In November 2009, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) published new guidelines for breast cancer screening by mammograms which sparked controversy on a vital topic to cancer organizations worldwide, the importance of early cancer detection.  These new guidelines are a significant shift from those issued in 2002, which at that time, recommended women ages 40 and older to have an annual mammogram.    The new recommended ages by the USPSTF to screen women for breast cancer is now 50 and older, leading to many questions on why such a change in policy is necessary.

How Come The World Health Officials Are So Nervous About The Swine Flu .Swine Flu Safety Handbook

I was wondering what the big deal was last year when H1N1 was all over the news. I am mean it didn’t seem like there were that many cases and it was on every station every minute of the day. I could not get any relief from it; I mean how does some flu outbreak 3000 miles away from my home influence me?

My inquisitiveness got the better of me and what I found, frankly frightened me a little bit. The reason that the World Health Officials are so concerned about The H1N1 is since of its similarities with the Spanish Influenza of 1918 that killed millions.

Now there is a enormous difference in the level of health care between 1918 and in the present day (obviously), but that doesn’t mean that Swine flu is not a very grave issue. You see most of the individuals that died from the Spanish Influenza were between 20 and 45 years old. These are understood to be the individuals that get sick less often and get better faster when they do get sick.

There is where the predicament is – The victims of the H1N1 have disproportionately been in this 20 to 45 age group; A Colossal Red Flag for the World Health Officials!

Conventionally the high risk are the very young and the elderly. Not to say that these individuals are not in jeopardy during a pandemic like this but the fact the supposedly lowest risk population is falling prey to the H1N1 Virus is reason to take this very genuinely.

What can we do? I believe the biggest and most important thing we can do is to get educated. That may seem like an easy thing to do, you know, with the web and all. But when I was trying to get answers for my inquiries – I walked away from my Computer feeling more perplexed than before I started.

The trouble is that there are too many opinions and not enough facts. There are the people that believe this is going to be the end of all of us. Waving there arms around like this kind of thing has never happened before. Then there are the ones that think there is completely no hazard from Swine flu. Well, that is not true either. A few individuals even think it is a government conspiracy to thin out the population?!

I did nevertheless find some good information in the form of an E-book – “The Swine flu Safety Handbook”. A Book written by a normal guy like me – who just happened to be very concerned about Swine flu and did the research.

It is an E-book that comes with 2 other books, between them they cover the whole lot from the history of the Swine flu, what the symptoms are, how it spreads, how to track it, organic medicines to boost immunity, anti-viral medications, vaccinations ect ect…

I believe that we ought to take responsibility for ourselves and our families, to be practical. That is why I live and promote living a green way of life at the individual and community level and that is why I am recommending this book. So we have a chance to get in front of this Pandemic and watch over our families.

Air Purifiers For A Healthy Lifestyle

Air purifiers can cut down on irritants in the air

It is quite possible invisible irritants inside the home may be causing any number of health problems. Most of us can only relate air pollution with overcrowded highways and factories with smoke pluming from tall towers. But the air you breathe inside your home may be much dirtier than the air found in the so-called great outdoors. According to the EPA, indoor air may be up to five times dirtier than the “fresh” air found outside. Any number of minuscule things may be found in the air of a typical home from dust to cigarette smoke. These irritants can contribute to certain health problems such as a sore throat, stuffy nose, asthma and even stroke and heart disease. An air purifier in the home can help alleviate some of these irritants. .

Air pollutants found in the home

In addition to cigarette smoke and house dust, there are many other irritants to be found in the home and it may seem like an impossible endeavor to remove them all but it can be done. Pet dander, dust mites, pest excrement, such as from cockroaches, all contributes to air pollution in the home. Mold in the bathroom and basement and nitrogen dioxide from gas stoves can also cause air problems. These irritants may cause itchy eyes, throat and nose. They may also be responsible for headaches, dizziness and fatigue. An air purifier is one strategy for getting rid of these toxants while aiding the entire family to be healthier and feel better. When shopping for an air purifier it is a good idea to check the air purifier ratings to make sure you are getting the best buy.

Strategies for getting rid of air pollutants in the home
Smoke – Simply ask people to smoke outside. They are used to it and don‘t mind. Also, use an air purifier for the home.
Roach residue – Call the exterminator.
Dust and dander – Keep pets out of the bedroom and off of the bed. Vacuum and dust once or twice weekly. Use antiallergenic carpet cleaners since they also kill dust mites. Use hypoallergenic pillows and a mattress made with natural fabrics and synthetic fillers. Zip both up in hypoallergenic covers to discourage pests from turning your bedroom into dust mite city. . Also, wash the mattress pads, sheets and comforters weekly in very hot water.
Nitrogen dioxide – To cut down on the irritants that wood-burning stoves, fireplaces and gas appliances emit, crack a window or run the kitchen exhaust fan. Consider using only electric in your home.
Mold and Fungi – Keep mold at bay by washing bathroom surfaces and shower curtains weekly with 1 part bleach to 10 parts water. Spread shower curtain out to dry and put towels in the washer immediately.

Dangerous levels of pollutants can build up if the house is poorly ventilated. Try cracking a window in the morning or evening and using a well maintained air conditioner. Don’t forget to change the filters on the heating system regularly.

What size of air purifier is best?

You will place the air purifier in the room that you spend the most time in which is usually the bedroom where you sleep. After you measure the room, check the clean air delivery rate seal on the back of the box. This will define the number of cubic feet of air pulled through the device per minute.

HEPA filters as air purifiers

HEPA stands for high-efficiency particulate air. These filters pull air through a thick fabric and traps unwanted particles. As air purifiers, Hunter HEPA filters are 99.97 % effective according to the EPA. Whole house HEPA filters are available but the EPA recommends using a stand alone unit. They are certainly less expensive and believed to not be any better than the stand alone units. In addition, you can also purchase a HEPA filter for your vacuum cleaner.

What type of air purifier should you buy?

There are quite a few types of air purifiers on the market to select from and it can be quite confusing. It good to compare the different types of air purifiers after determining your objective and budget.

Electronic air cleaners – The American Lung Association recommends the models that electronically charge particles in the air and draw them to a metal plate or filter within the unit. Choose full-size whole-room air filters. Tabletop models will not have enough power.
Hybrid filters – A combination of the HEPA and electronic air purifier.
Gas phase filters – They remove gases, vapors, and odors from the air but not particle pollutants such as dust. These are often found in certain workplace settings where chemicals are found.
Ozone generator – Their use is greatly discouraged by the EPA and the American Lung Association; ozone is a known lung irritant that can cause permanent damage.
Plants – The EPA doesn’t recommend houseplants as air purifiers. Wet soil can pollute the air by adding mold to the atmosphere,
Air sprays – There’s no evidence that air purifying sprays do anything to reduce common pollutants. They may cause more irritation to your respiratory system. This includes candles, sprays and potpourri for sensitive individuals.

Whether an air purifier is being considered for the sick room or as a holistic preventative approach toward good health, almost all physicians agree that air purifiers do improve the quality of air within the home. The American Heart Association offers a free guide for freshening the air you breathe in your home that may also be helpful.

N95 Mask For H1N1 Virus, Swine Flu

N95 Mask for H1N1 – N95 mask 3m

How serious is the risk of the H1N1 swine flu? The H1N1 Virus, also known as “Swine Flu,” has already claimed the lives of some United States citizens. Many in Mexico have been killed by the swine flu virus, as well, and the infection rates continue rise up each and every day. How can you protect yourself from the H1N1 virus this cold season? Many believe that an N95 mask can offer a viable shield.

There are many types of masks available that do not protect against the H1N1 flu. Some surgical, isolation, and dental masks offer no protection from the swine flu pandemic. In August of 2009, the CDC in collaboration with the WHO released a statement that suggested the N95 mask could be used as valid protection against the H1N1 Swine Flu Virus.

A 3M N95 mask is technically an n95 particulate respirator mask. The N95 respirator mask is designed to provide protection from body fluid and blood penetration. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health agrees with the above statement, as they also believe that the N95 masks works effectively against Swine Flu. The N95 mask, when properly used, can filter germs from the breath and put a halt to the spread of the H1N1 virus.

According to information released by UCLA, N95 is made by various manufacturers under different names (the 3M N95 being one of many). The “N95″ is a simple government efficiency rating indicating that the mask blocks just about 95% of all particles that are at least .3 microns in size.

When using a 3M N95 Respirator Mask, or any N95 masks, certain guidelines should be followed. First off, the mask should be removed and discarded immediately if it becomes physically damaged. Second, masks should be disposed of as “bio hazard” waste and the user should always wash their hands immediately upon disposal. Masks are only effective if they fit properly and are worn according to instructions. While wearing an N95 respirator mask, be sure to avoid touching the eyes and nose, also, as these can be quick routes to infection.

The N95 disposable mask comes in five different models and several designs. The earloop facemask design offers a standard tie on surgical mask. The N95 surgical dust mask helps to protect from not only germs and birdflu, but also airborne dust particles. The N95 disposable filter mask is has an activated carbon filter, and can also protect against airborne allergens. Finally, the 3M N95 Surgical Mask, perhaps the best of the bunch, has a flat fold three panel design which offers a most comfortable fit. This mask can be used during surgery to help protect against airborne particulates.

Whichever N95 mask you decide on, it is important to follow instructions and insure that the fit is proper. Even with a swine flu vaccine, the swine flu virus must be avoided proactively, and the n95 particulate mask might just be the best choice.
